How Do Brains Become Unbalanced

Half a century ago, life was relatively peaceful. However, with the communications revolution and the stressful requirements of a modern lifestyle, we are now dealing with 50 000 times more information per second than fifty years ago.

Technology may have advanced, but our brains are biological organisms, not mechanical devices, and need more time to evolve and catch up so as to cope with this staggering quantity of input.

Add to this the sheer stress most of us experience through daily living, and one can understand why the brain has taken steps to shield vulnerable areas and protect itself.

Although a certain amount of stress is beneficial, and keeps us ‘on our toes’ - interested and aware and able to perform better - the overdose of stress most of us are subjected to on a daily basis results in lack of focus, depression, fatigue and disorganisation. Digestion slows down, or stops altogether as the brain uses available resources to deal with stress rather than food.

Medieval man believed the stomach to be the centre of being, rather than the head, and for very good reasons. When our digestive system does not function properly, we do not function properly, and feel sluggish and dull. We wait to absorb nutrients that do not arrive because our food ‘transport system’ is on a ‘go-slow’.

Too much stress has a profound effect on brain structure itself, leading to decreased cell regeneration and reducing the connections between brain cells. If the stress is experienced at a young, formative stage, the effects are even more severe.
